Amana
in 2018!
The Seven Amana Colonies were founded
by German Immigrants escaping religious persecution. They first settled in New York in 1855. Desiring more farm land they moved west and
loved the fertile fields in Amana, IA.
These industrious people built
furniture, clocks, made cheese and woolen goods. Their communal way of life ended just before
the Great Depression. Families were
given their houses and freedom to work elsewhere. Many stayed in Amana and those families are
there today.
There are numerous restaurants in the
Main Amana and in some other colonies.
Each colony is approximately 7 miles apart or an ox cart day away. Of interest is driving the loop through Main
Amana, East Amana, High Amana, Middle Amana, South Amana, West Amana and
Homestead. Homestead was added because
it had railway access. These towns are
mostly residential.
