Musical: “Back to Your Sr. Yr in High School”

This musical was written by GEAR director Charles Marston and performed in Winston-Salem, NC on October 19, 2011 for evening entertainment. The band and chorus, in eight events, took the audience back in time to their high school senior year.

The Football Game

“Ladies and gentlemen your Frustrated Maestros would like to welcome you back to your senior year in high school. The year is 1950 something. The place is the football field at Home Town High School. The drum major whistles the band to attention to play “High School Cadets.” She leads them into the arena. “Mr. Touchdown” is heard leading to the halftime and crowing of the King and Queen. “Love Me Tender” can be heard in the background.

Homecoming-Sock Hop - homecoming queen

Following the game and the crowning of the queen a sock hop follows in the gym of Home Town High. Coach Harry Knuckles has cautioned that street shoes be removed before dancing on the gym floor. Bill Hailey and the Comments could not make it but Bob Hadley and the No Comments provided the Dixieland Music for the sock hop.




Field Trip
Students file on the bus to gain a cultural experience at the symphony. Typical kids begun to sing “The Wheels on the Bus Go Round…” Wrong song and “Ninety-Nine Bottle of Beer” can be heard. Wrong song again leads to “Be Kind to Your Web Footed Friend.” Old maid teacher, Miss Monotone, is totally exasperated. Once in the auditorium students listen to a choral rendition of “Laudamus Canon” in Latin and the “Theme from the New World.” Enriched the students turn in their chairs and return to school.





Holiday Concert
The Holiday Concert features “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” and “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” When “Jolly Ole Saint Nicholas” is rendered by band and chorus the man in red and Mrs. Claus emerge into the audience throwing out candy.

Musical
Spring arrives and the musical is scheduled. Featured from Oklahoma is “Oh What a Beautiful Morning.” From “The Music Man” the band performed “Seventy-Six Trombones.”

Prom
The end of the senior year is close and prom preparations are made. We dressed in our best. We even purchased something special for that night…like maybe a white sport coat for that date with my special angel, the prom queen.


Music We listened to..

Our radios were our link to music and the outside world. We heard “Baby Elephant Walk”, “Crazy”, and “Mickey Mouse March.” Bluegrass music claimed out attention.



Graduation

Our graduation time had come. We are challenged with paths to higher education, marriage and service to our country. Service Songs played filled us with pride. A solo of “Climb Every Mountain” lifted us to high goals.

Our narrator speaks: “The band and chorus will do one more selection that brings the graduation to a close. This also brings to a close our trip through your senior year in high school. Thank you for being so good to come along with your Frustrated Maestros on our journey.” The Navy Hymn with band and chorus ends this segment.

The “Mickey Mouse March” show cased the performs in the band and chorus.

Coffee Hours

Maestros demonstrated their versatility of musicianship at the early Morning Coffee and Donut hour three mornings. Their programs included solos, duets, small groups and a Service Salute.




Parade

Maestros completed the rally by leading the parade. The crowd was then treated to music from the gazebo.






Ice Cream Social

Those attending the ice cream social were treated to Bluegrass music led by the Wicker Pickers.

Luncheon-meeting
Sharps and Flats set Oct. 20 as a date to let The Colonel serve lunch. Unfortunately the gray clouds created cold winds and miserable conditions. The regular business meeting followed. Harold and Terry Crouch were presented an Honorary Lifetime Membership in the Frustrated Maestros, Eastern Sharps and Flats chapter. . Director Charles Marston and Roxie were surprised with a thank you gift card.
